My thought (in this specific automobile instance)

I'm a long term owner of automobiles, so I would never purchase any vehicle that had a "lifetime" automatic transmission. (Just another reason I like automobiles with manual transmissions.)

What I feel they (Lexus, BMW, etc.) should do is put their automatic transmissions on a regular service schedule. Heck, make it 100K mile intervals if they wish (hopefully no longer than 60K intervals), just be able to extend the life beyond 170K.

When I took the automatic transmission rebuild class at TCC, the major thing I took away from the course was to ALWAYS KEEP AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ON THEIR SCHEDULED SERVICE INTERVALS!!!!!!!! Those devices are very complicated, and rebuilds are very involved, thus I'm not surprised that Lexus dealer transmission replacement is $6K.

The cheaper repair would be to find a ES transmission on EBAY and have it shipped back to an independent shop for the swap. Unfortunately you won't get any type of warranty, but it will be significantly cheaper. (Haven't searched, but guess you can probably find one for )()()()()
